Psychoacoustics is the study of the relationship between the phtsical aspects of sound and and the brains interpretation of these sounds.  The origins of psychoacoustic research was concerned with the determination of how the human hearing system worked.  Here the aim was to determine how sound entered the ear and was processed by the inner components of the ear as well as the brain. The resulting auditorial perception provides important information of the source including loudness, directional cues and quality. From an engineering perspective it is the qualitative aspects of sounds that are of much interest. This introduces the concept of sound quality.

The field of sound quality aims to quanitatively describe the qualitative aspects of a source. From a consumers perspective, the quality of the sound emissions from a product is a pereptionally important indicator of the qulaity of the product.
